OVERVIEW

One of the best kept secrets away from the crowds, lies the Catalan Coast just a few hours north of Barcelona. With spoilt for choice walking paths, this self-guided journey will have you constantly mesmerised by the scenery and its beauty. Commencing in Colliour, France, walking to Cadaques, Spain, discovering the magnificent contrasting landscapes as you go. It takes you along the Côte Vermeille, beloved of the artists Dali and Miro. The path from Banyuls-sur-Mer to the border with Spain follows the route taken by Walter Benjamin, the German-Jewish philosopher, on 24th September 1940, and is also the route followed by many Jewish refugees during World War II. From the coast to the mountains, from sea to crag, from sandy beach to shady Mediterranean forest a diverse natural landscape full of contrast, history, with clear emerald waters and charming fishing villages. Stunning views, friendly people and a unique culture are all highlights of this journey.

 


SELF-GUIDED

You will be equipped with route maps and instructions complete with directions to guide you between villages. Wandering the World takes care of all your accommodation and luggage transfers. You only need carry your day pack with essentials and water supply so you can relax and enjoy every step. A reasonable level of fitness is required as there are some steep uphill stretches.

HIGHLIGHTS

ARRIVE COLLIOURE (FRANCE) - Day 1/Night 1

Collioure is outstanding in terms of beauty, and surrounded by spectacular beaches, all attracting the likes of Mattisse and Picasso in their day. A certain loveliness is captured in every direction of this unique coastal village.

Starting your journey with a stay in a quiet Basque-style guest house, elegantly decorated, each with a personal style. The owner will be on hand to greet you and ensure a comfortable stay. There are many choices for meals just outside your door, ask for a recommendation for the most up to date information.

BANYULS-SUR-MER (FRANCE) - Day 2/Night 2 Walking time: Approx 5 hours. 13 kms

A fairly undemanding walk today, with a mix of coastal paths, orange groves and rural country lanes. You will follow a rocky promontory, looking out across the clear blue sea before descending through vineyards to Banyuls-sur-Mer, your place for the evening.

LLANCA (SPAIN) - Day 3/Night 3 Walking time: Approx 7 hours. 15 kms

Today’s destination is Llanca, f rom the vineyards you’ll pass through thick forest and onto a ridge fora panoramic view of both France and Spain. It is worth a long pause for this special occasion. You will need to follow this ridge to the border and descend back to sea level at Port Bou in Spain, an ideal place to enjoy a coffee on the waters edge, before taking the short picturesque train journey to Llança.

PORT DE LA SELVA (SPAIN) - Day 4/Night 4 Walking time: Approx 5 to 6 hours. 12kms

(NOTE: no accommodation open on a Sunday or Monday)

One of today’s highlights is the climb to the monastery Sant Père de Rodes from where there are exceptional views and where Romanesque art is distinguished by Arab and Carolingian influences. Spend some time absorbing the history, and ideal place to enjoy a snack and appreciate the history of this remarkable place. Walk down to Port de la Selva.

CADAQUES (SPAIN) - Day 5/Night 5 Walking time: Approx 7 hours. 20 kms

 

Another day of enduring enormous beauty, initially following a deeply rural path to reach Cap de Creus, a magical place where the Mediterranean sea, stirred by the 'Tramontane', rushes in as the "Cova de l'Infern". Following a picturesque path with low stone walls, till you reach Port Lligat, the perfect coffee stop.

 

Just down the road lies Salvador Dali’s residence , which is well worth a visit. It is a unique opportunity to imagine how the incredibly talented master at work, was inspired by his surroundings. Entrance isby appointment only, which needs to be made ‘online’ ahead of time, or you can try your chances  on the day. There are only 8 people allowed to enter the building at a given time, which also makes this a special and moving experience. 

 

Arriving into Cadaques by foot is a triumph. (Meals: Breakfast & Dinner) 

 

CADAQUES (SPAIN) - Day 6/Night 6 Walking time: Approx 5 hours. 13 kms

There are some brilliant walks to showcase the village of Cadaques. A circular walk uphill to Cala Nans, before descending to the coast, is one of many. There is also some great local food to enjoy, including the famous Compartir Restaurant in the historical centre, if fine food is not to your liking, there are more modest places that offer great food experiences along the waterfront and in the alleyways.

The trip ends this morning after breakfast in Cadaques. (Breakfast only)
